English: Precession of the earth, it’s similar to a spin or a spinning top. Español: Movimiento de precesión de la tierra, similar a un trompo o peonza. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The number 72 is significant in terms of astronomy because the heavenly bodies appear to move through one degree of their cycle over a period of seventy two years.
360……………the number of degrees in a circle.
When the seventy two years are multiplied by 360 degrees of the complete cycle, we discover that it takes 25,920 years for each heavenly cycle to be completed and then the cycle begins again. This is called Precession. The reason we have Precession is that the earth not only rotates on it’s axis ( world pillar or axis munde ) but it also has a slight wobble caused by the sun’s force on the earth at the equator ( this creates an effect a bit like a spinning top when it loses momentum ).
Precession of the equinoxes as seen from ‘outside’ the celestial dome. The shift of the Earth’s polar axis over 5000 year among the stars (orange: 3000 BC at Thuban, yellow: 2000 AD at Polaris) goes together with a shift of the equatorial planes and therefore the equinoxes along the ecliptic. This movement over a long period of time alters the direction of the Polar axis. One cycle is completed every 25,920 years. The centre point of this revolution is called the pole of the ecliptic. This is the fifth cardinal direction ( known in ancient Egypt as the Eye of Ra ).
The apparent movement of the night sky around the pole star also includes the signs of the zodiac and their movement across the sky. We are aware of the annual cycle that takes place but the zodiacal also occurs over a period of 25,920 years. ( Four seasons, Twelve ages, Procession of Equinoxes ). The twelve ages are markers, timing the sun entering a new age or sign of the zodiac. The images of the twelve zodiac constellations appear to progress across the sky as if in a royal procession. Each zodiac season is marked by the Lion, Bull, The Man and The Eagle relating to the four cardinal directions. In China the equivalent would be the Azure Dragon – Spring, White Tiger – Autumn, Red Bird – Summer, and Black Turtle – Winter.
The number 72 appears in many traditions. The thirteenth century Sufi, Haydar Amuli recognised that ” every number contains in itself an esoteric secret which is not to be found in any other number “.
The number 72 hints at the intimate connection between Man and the Universe because 72 expresses the esoteric secret of the circulation of human blood aswell as the cosmic journey of the stars called Precession.
The average healthy heart beats at 72 beats per minute.
Philip Pullman touches upon some interesting scientific and philosophical ideas in his trilogy of books – His Dark Materials. The little girl Lyra has a compass like instrument which she can ask questions to. The compass has concentric circles of images and pictures which the needles move about and point to. Lyra then interprets these images and comes up with the correct answer. The idea being that the thought process and the instrument combine together as if there is communication. ( also a quantum physics aspect along the lines of – particles and matter creating a bridge between the two from……………….thought. ) Intriguing ………..but this is a work of fiction albeit a clever one.
However, there is a work that does exist which is an authentic enigma. Carl Jung, the Swiss analyst, spent a summer trying to disprove this phenomena and became that impressed he began to use it in his work.
The I Ching is a philosophical book that outlines the origin and nature of life on earth. It is a multi faceted book which also has a beautiful mathematics that underlies it. It is more commonly known as an oracle and is a means of obtaining advice and answers to questions of importance to do with an individual’s life.
There are 64 symbols called hexagrams which make up the book ( ….incidentally the DNA is made up of 64 codewords………………coincidence ? ). They describe 64 energetic states of being which are in flow with one another. One could view the hexagrams as different, descriptive qualities of energy. Each state or quality consists of a Yin Yang ratio and comes with an image called a pictogram and an interpretation written in poetry and prose. The interpretations that are given for each hexagram are filled with metaphor and are intended to act as a catalyst to the mind of the reader, triggering insights into the nature of reality. It is from this contemplation that we are able to see things that others may not.
SQUARING THE CIRCLE

The square represents the physical. The circle represents the spiritual. Throughout history people have attempted the impossible, to square the circle. Ahmes, using Egyptian geometry said that the area of a circular field – diameter of nine, is equal to the area of Chinese history the numbers eight and nine have great importance. The number eight because it represents the eight directionsand trigrams ( relating to elements, body parts and members of family ). It is a Yin number. The number nine is the largest single digit odd number ( odd numbers are considered heavenly ). It is Yang. If we look at what this mathematical puzzle is attempting we can see that it is trying to create Heaven on Earth.
According to Feng Shui: Mother, Earth, Square, Eight, Yin. / Father, Heaven, Circle, Nine, Yang.
According to our mathematical puzzle we are trying to make one fit the other equally. The area of a square with side of eight. 8 x 8 = 64. The area of a circle with diameter of nine = Pi r squared. The Egyptians taking Pi to be 3.1605. So 3.1605 x ( 4.5 ) squared = 64.000125. Very close indeed ! Or if we use the more accurate mathematical value of Pi ( 3.142 ) then it comes to 63.6255.
Now it is said that this puzzle is impossible. According to our way of thinking – yes it is. But what if we were to alter our perception slightly ?
The I Ching explains to us that a fundamental law of life is change and this cycle of change is constant and ever evolving. The two hexagrams that signify the end of the cycle are numbers 63 and 64. Let’s look at the meanings of these two hexagrams.
63 – COMPLETION
This hexagram represents a condition of balance, harmony and absolute correctness. It is an ideal situation. However, Sages with profound experience had the insight that this was also a time of climax. Beyond the climax every perfect condition alternates to its opposite. So they purposefully made progress in small steps and remained steadfast. When people find themselves in perfect situations and have achieved their goals, they tend to lose focus and drive. This is why it is important to act to keep the good fortune. Completion is not necessarily the end and the end is not necessarily completion. ( 63.6255 ).
64 – BEFORE COMPLETION
This hexagram is all about change from chaos to order. However, the change is still underway, and things are not yet stable or fixed. This is another cyclical change. The idea of continuing and overlapping cycles reflects Heaven, Earth and Human revolving and interacting with each other in their respective cycle. The sixty four hexagrams are sometimes arranged in a circle. This reflects the unending, universal motion. ( In western symbolism the Uroboros figure of a snake biting it’s own tail forms the circle of the zodiac ). It is well known from the I Ching that both Yin and Yang contain the seeds of their opposite. Closing the hexagrams with Complete and Not Complete signifies the cycle of change, of the negative leading to the positive and the positive leading to the negative. What it does is complete the cycle and begins it’s entrance into the next crossing. ( 64.000125 ).
If we look at the puzzle and attach the meanings of the hexagrams to the resultant numbers .
It is the human need for structure which makes us define our world with boundaries, while the universe itself is boundless and infinite. The important message here is that Hexagram 64 is not the end. It comes after Completion and unveils our enclosed perception of space and time. ( to go towards the spiritual knowledge one must go beyond the rational )
The puzzle itself cannot be solved according to our rational way of thinking but, is it possible to come up with a description of the answer in metaphor and be accurate ? Why not ?
8 x 9 = 72……………………………and what delights lay in store here methinks…….?!
Question: i) a sentence worded or expressed so as to seek information. ii) a problem requiring an answer or solution.
These are a couple of meanings put down in the english dictionary. But what does a question do ? Does it serve a purpose ? It opens up a line of enquiry. By asking a question we are extending the reach of our minds. A movement begins.
In some traditional philosophies the question can be regarded as a universal law along the lines of cause and effect……………in that one can ask any question about anything and the answer will be given. So for example such questions like Who am I ?, Where am I going ?, What do I want to do ?, What is the purpose of my life ?, ……….these are powerful words to say or write down.
If we look at human development through the ages, one can see the vast movement and wonders that the human race is capable of and in all likelihood stemming from questions just like these.
As individuals we apply this in our everyday lives to a greater or lesser extent. One can ask questions to do with everyday life – Where do I want to live ? What do I want to do for work and career ?
Whether we pay attention or not when the answers come is another matter. We live our lives in a fast automated way much of the time so hints and clues can sometimes be missed or perhaps we forget about asking a particular question in the first place !!
” The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office “. Robert Frost.
Modern culture does not allow much time for wondering. The pressure of daily survival creates an activity trap, so that action and doing things supersedes reflection, discovery and consideration. Wondering helps us to discover possibilities. Our minds moving beyond the limits of our time worn approaches. Allowing our thoughts to drift and meander in any direction. Certain conditions call for versatility, ingenuity, and flexibility; wondering is the minds way of moving beyond boundaries and experiencing something new, fresh and innovative.
” He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed “. Albert Einstein.
” Wisdom begins in wonder “. Socrates.
Lets look at a piece of writing that opens the mind to a new way of thinking. Wu Jing Nuan, as well as being a painter and sculptor, is also a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine. He is the author of Yi Jing; his own translation and interpretation of the Book of Changes. In his book he makes an observant and fantastic description.
” In ancient times, pulse readings were taken at the carotid pulse, and then measured in ratio to inhalation and exhalation. This gave way to using the radial pulses at the wrists to monitor qi flow. Each wrist has six types of pulse, twelve in all for each meridean channel. When pressed by the doctor, they exhibit different tactile sensations. Like designs and waveforms on a modern oscilloscope, their relative harmony or disharmony gives a picture of the qi flow in its pathways. From these pictures, the doctor can prescribe therapy to keep the patient in good health. Chinese medicine seeks to do more than remedy existing problems; it is preventative medicine, and to practise preventative medicine is to divine the future. Through the study of Chinese medicine and I Ching the doctor or individual can understand forces both seen and unseen “.
There is an ancient word he uses in his book called ” Xiang ” which means an image, to resemble, an interpreter, diagrams. He explains that Xiang are visible but also exist before physical form; the subatomic blueprint before manifestation.
Here we see that energy, vibration, consciousness, movement can be translated for our understanding in ways in which we as humans can communicate or express ourselves. Pictures, Art, Diagrams, Numbers, Language.
